In this episode of The Next ChaptHER podcast, Andrea Hecht has an honest and heartfelt conversation with Abby Perry, a fellow Midwesterner, sorority sister, and mother of four (triplets + 1). Abby shares her journey from struggling to find her passion as a child to becoming a pharmaceutical sales representative and, eventually, an entrepreneur.
Abby, as a woman with ADHD, talks candidly about the pressure she felt to choose a traditional career path and how it took her a while to find what truly made her happy. She also opens up about the challenges of being a mother and balancing her career and family life. Abby's story shows that it's always possible to follow your dreams and that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
Key Takeaways:
- It's okay not to know what you want to do as a child or even in college.
- Don't be afraid to take a chance and try something new
- There is an essential distinction between work-life balance and work-life integration and how, as a mother with ADHD, work-life integration has been the more comfortable way
- Listen to what sparks your interest and follow that passion. It may lead you to unexpected opportunities.
- Refrain from feeling pressure to fit into a traditional career path, especially if it doesn't fulfill you.
- Starting a business takes hard work and dedication, but doing what you love is worth it.
Important Quotes:
Abby Perry on choosing a career path: "I still felt like I was putting myself in this box. Like I have to go get this job because that's what you do when you're done with college."
Abby Perry's childhood dreams: "I just never really knew, but I loved creative things. I loved to sit and draw or color or paint. I loved going outside. I love nature."
Abby Perry on discovering her passion for plants: "I took a botany class and I absolutely fell in love with it. Like I was at the greenhouse all the time. We got to do all these cool experiments."
Andrea Hecht on feeling pressure to choose a traditional career path: "It's really hard when you feel the pressure to kind of choose this traditional path. And I think that that is something that a lot of women, mothers, we can all relate to that."
Abby Perry on starting her own business: "It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but it's so worth it if you're doing what you love."

As a working mother, do you often find yourself struggling to balance your passions with your daily responsibilities? If so, you’re not alone.
Meet Julie Feldman, the owner of Guys N Gals, who understands the struggles as well.
In a heartfelt conversation with Andrea Hecht, Julie shares her journey from childhood to owning a retail business and the challenges of balancing work and family life.
Julie discovered her love for dressing people and merchandising at a young age and has been pursuing her dreams ever since.
However, she also knows firsthand that achieving a work-life balance can be tough, especially when running a retail business.
Julie shares her experience with finding the right balance. She stresses the importance of setting boundaries, finding time for self-care, and having a supportive community.
Julie understands the guilt that many working mothers can feel and how it can be challenging to find flexibility in certain industries.
Throughout the conversation, Julie's passion for fashion shines through, and her story is an inspiration for anyone who wants to learn about the behind-the-scenes of running a business and the importance of finding balance in life.
Quotes:
- I think it's hard. I think it's a very hard thing, especially if you're in retail. Retail is one of the hardest jobs you could have with a family. The next one, being at the most, the hardest would be the restaurant business. It's a very hard struggle because when it's your business, it doesn't matter what's going on. You still have to work. It's hard to call in. If you don't have enough people, if you're lucky enough, they have enough people to fill in. But if you don't, you don't. It's a very hard, it's a struggle. (Julie Feldman | 05:19.33)
- “So I think it's a hard balance. And a lot of mothers, I get that guilt. It's a guilt that when you're working, whether a doctor or a lawyer, you're in retail, restaurant, whatever it is, it is a hard balance. You don't have a lot of flexibility in those types of jobs. (Julie Feldman | 6:14)
- “A lot of people think balance is 5050. And when you put that pressure on yourself to give equal attention at any given time, that's a lot of pressure. And so I always like to remind people that you need to think about your kind of seasons in life, seasons in business, and what is happening, and how you can kind of shift those priorities. (Andrea Hecht | 7:40)
- “So yeah, those were times I missed out on my kids' activities. I'm fortunate that my family is amazing. Like my mom and dad used to go to all my kids' baseball games. If I couldn't go, they went. I used to get off the plane and go straight to a baseball game. I'd make sure I'd get home though. If it was a day I was coming home, I didn't take the last flight out. When my kids were younger, I'd get home to go to that baseball game. And I did leave work early on the days that my kids had baseball so that I would never miss, I'm saying baseball, baseball game, a roller hockey game, a ski meet. So, I did leave work early on those days so that I never missed something that my kids were competing in.” (Julie Feldman | 10:06)

Mom Guilt: Why It’s Normal and How to Overcome It with Allison Reff (RERUN)
Wednesday Feb 07, 2024
Wednesday Feb 07, 2024
The Next ChaptHER Podcast is celebrating its first anniversary. To mark the occasion, we’re re-airing our first episode, which originally aired on February 7th, 2023.
Thank you, Allison Reff, for being the first Next ChaptHER community member. This group of women support each other in navigating the different roles and titles that mothers have as they try to live a life filled with purpose that makes them feel alive inside and outside of motherhood.
In that first episode, Allison talked about Mom Guilt, which struck a chord with many of our listeners. It’s such an important topic, and we’re thrilled to help normalize the experience of mom guilt and let other moms know they’re not alone.
The Next ChaptHER Podcast's initial reviews are a testament to the power of the very first interview:
- “Listening to the Mom Guilt episode, I felt so seen. Great interview and engaging, thoughtful host! Looking forward to the next episodes!”
- “Love the idea of helping women craft the next chapter in their story. Great First episode. Nice to hear the difference between the dream and reality. Can’t wait to see what comes next!”
- “Already hooked. This is gonna be a good one!”
- “This is wonderful! Excited for more.”
- “I loved listening to the podcast because it took me back to your coaching sessions!”
- “Your intro is so professional. Mom guilt is a great topic. We all experience it.”
- “Great first episode.”
- “Nice job running it! I thought you did a fantastic job!”
- “Good luck with the show. I like the idea.”
Quotes from Episode:
- “I’ve learned throughout everything that you are constantly changing, and you don't have to have it all figured out at college graduation or when you have your first child or at forty. You know you have the right to change paths, dreams, and aspirations, and you're never too old to do that” (Allison Reff)
- “Mom Guilt, it’s so real, right? It’s so real, and it really hits everyone, and it’s different for everyone. It’s just not really productive individually or on like the larger scale of society.” (Allison Reff)

From a “Good-on-Paper” Girl to Following Your Inner Compass, with Meghan Khanna
Tuesday Feb 06, 2024
Tuesday Feb 06, 2024
Are you tired of living a life based on societal expectations and people-pleasing tendencies, a.k .a. the Good-on-Paper Girl path?
Join Andrea Hecht and Meghan Khanna in a conversation about how external achievements can lead someone down their path and misalign one's' true desires and values.
Meghan, a former lawyer and mother of 4, will share her experience of making a career shift to follow her inner compass.
During the conversation, Meghan shares the transformative journey she embarked on to rediscover her values and passions and the pivotal moment she chose to prioritize her family over her career. Megan defines self-care as a fluid and intuitive practice that involves tuning into your needs and taking intentional actions to nurture yourself. One of the highlights of the conversation is Meghan's' perspective on the significance of living authentically and embracing your true self.
Don't' miss out on this opportunity to learn how to live a life that aligns with your values and passions.
Quotes:
- "Good-on-paper is your resume, and your resume is what you present to the world. And to me, good on paper is thinking of myself as a set of credentials. Thinking of myself as having to impress somebody to earn a place, to be defined by how I slot into a profession or into a social network. It's just very external." (11:21 | Meghan Khanna)
- "That inner voice is always there. It's either cheering you on, or we all have that kind of inner critic too." (12:27 | Andrea Hecht)
- "I would encourage anyone to think about self-care is that there is really no mold or no plan. As much as I just mentioned, I have habit trackers and stuff. I think that it's really important to get up and just know what you need" (16:10 | Meghan Khanna)
- "We have these brilliant, beautiful flames that we come into the world as, and it's almost like we're putting like blankets over that flame when we get programmed to sit still or be a good girl or let someone else go first. You know, there are so many shades of programming. But then I think that when we get to a point in midlife or earlier, hopefully, we start learning how to take care of ourselves by taking those blankets off and letting that very native and original light shine again."
