“With social media, influencers are now at the forefront of who our teens look up to. But how do we, as parents, help them discern which influencers are worthy of their admiration, especially in a world where AI can create perfect yet unrealistic personas?” Andrea Hecht raises this question in the final episode of the series “A Pediatrician's Perspective.” With Dr. Lisa Klein, they talk about the challenge of helping teens navigate a digital landscape where appearance often overshadows authenticity.
They explore the difference between influencers who push superficial values and those who stand for resilience, hard work, and real passion. Dr. Klein stresses the need of helping teens focus on role models who inspire through character and meaningful accomplishments—not just looks. How can parents initiate these conversations? Andrea and Dr. Klein offer helpful strategies for parents to help guide their teens toward influencers who will positively impact their development in the digital age by promoting open conversations and educating them to think critically about the content they consume.
Quotes
- “Let’s start by being excellent role models ourselves and being honest and vulnerable with our tweens and teens about how we have awesome, confident days, but also days where we’re feeling kind of insecure—and that’s okay. We’re not robots; we feel things. We’re not perfect. So, let’s be good role models by finding good role models for ourselves at our age, and then helping our kids find who could be good role models for them.” (03:19 | Dr. Lisa Klein)
- “It starts with us, understanding that we need to make sure we are following proper role models. We all know we’re guilty of putting on a quick filter or taking a picture and then deleting it, but we need to have those conversations… Sometimes these kids don’t understand that the people they’re following aren’t necessarily targeting children or considering what those children might think of them.” (05:44 | Andrea Hecht)
- “It’s just good to follow people with passions, hobbies, and honesty. And yeah, the fun stuff is there too, as long as you stay in the mindset that, okay, I’ll take it for what it’s worth, but no one’s life is perfect, happy, and sunshine all the time.” (07:29 | Dr. Lisa Klein)
- “Be real, be raw, don't use filters to change your appearance. Filter who you follow, filter the information coming at you. Is it real? Is it fake?” (12:10 | Dr. Lisa Klein)

“The young tween girls today want skincare as birthday gifts at their parties. That’s all they want: skincare, skincare, skincare,” says Dr. Lisa Klein. “This is a problem. It’s the latest craze, and it’s not okay. It’s not just about wasting money; these kids are damaging their skin.”
In this episode, part two of “A Pediatrician’s Perspective” series, Andrea Hecht and Dr. Klein talk about the rise of teen skincare trends driven by social media. Dr. Klein warns against using harsh products that can cause more harm than good and emphasizes the value of simple, age-appropriate routines for sensitive teen skin. She encourages open conversations between parents and teens about skincare choices and promotes a holistic approach to skin health, reminding us that what we put on our skin affects the entire body.
Quotes
- “We have to be more educated and knowledgeable about what’s in our products, and understand that children’s skin is different from adult skin. Kids have healthy, sensitive skin that doesn’t need much.” (03:37 | Dr. Lisa Klein)
- “I’m not shaming parents—I hear you. I’m a mom. Parenting is not for the weak. We want our kids to have fun and be part of fun trends. And you can have safe, fun skincare. You can have multiple products, but they should be multiple safe products.” (05:19 | Dr. Lisa Klein)
- “Let’s create good habits. Let’s not believe everything we see on social media. Just like with everything else we teach them about social media, not everyone looks like that—everything’s edited. Just because you hear something doesn’t mean it’s true. The same goes for skincare, so we have to be very careful.” (07:09 | Dr. Lisa Klein)
- “The key is simplification. It also involves having the conversation, educating your kids, and understanding that skincare is not just a toy—though I don’t know if ‘toy’ is the right word as they get older. I know my daughter enjoys doing ‘get ready with me’ and ‘get unready with me’ videos, and it becomes this whole thing where they do a haul of what they got. But we also need to make sure they’re using safe products.” (08:28 | Andrea Hecht)

“We need to be able to have open conversations so they feel comfortable coming to us when they’re in a bad or an uncomfortable situation,” says returning guest Dr. Lisa Klein, a board-certified pediatrician specializing in adolescent medicine and co-founder of Turning Teen. Andrea Hecht and Dr. Klein kick off their three-part series, "A Pediatrician’s Perspective” which aims to empower parents to engage in crucial conversations with their teens. This episode—part one of the series—dives into the sensitive but important topic of unsolicited or inappropriate images, referred to as “ick pics,” that teens could come across online.
Dr. Klein emphasizes how important it is to have these conversations about consent and internet safety earlier than most parents would think. Having these talks with parents before issues emerge gives teenagers the confidence that they may approach them without worrying about being judged or punished. How can we foster this kind of open communication that empowers teens in today’s complex digital landscape? Andrea and Dr. Klein encourage maintaining calm, approachable communication that helps teens make better choices. Tune in to get practical tips for setting boundaries, building trust, and encouraging teens to speak up when they encounter something inappropriate online.
Quotes
- “‘Ick pic’ is a picture of naked people, private parts, right? Anything inappropriate. And it’s not necessarily that you asked for it. A lot of times it’s accidental exposure or unsolicited receiving of it. And in a perfect world, we would talk about it with our kids before any of it happens, so we know what to do… My main messages are: shame-free, don’t embarrass them, don’t punish them. We need to be able to have open conversations so they feel comfortable coming to us when they’re in a bad or an uncomfortable situation.” (04:19 | Dr. Lisa Klein)
- “I think it’s really important that we take a deep breath. We need to understand that this is an uncomfortable conversation, and we need to be prepared. We must make sure not to shame anybody because that immediately shuts down the line of communication.” (06:30 | Andrea Hecht)
- “We need to be teaching our kids that private parts are private.” (08:39 | Dr. Lisa Klein)
- “We have to start talking to our kids early and often about every topic, including the ones that make us uncomfortable, like inappropriate pictures and pornography—what we see online, how to prevent it, and how to deal with it when it happens. So, stay calm, stay shame-free, and try to avoid embarrassment. Again, parents, use your resources. There are resources for all these things now available at your fingertips.” (15:52 | Dr. Lisa Klein)

Rediscovering Beauty: Expert Tips on Aging Gracefully with Dr. Julia Milman
Tuesday Sep 24, 2024
Tuesday Sep 24, 2024
“I am a very, very big proponent of less is more. I definitely do not think that it is necessary to use a 25-step skincare routine or do all sorts of injections or a million lasers, etc.,” says this week’s guest, Dr. Julia Milman, a board-certified physician and the owner and medical director of Dr. Julia Milman’s Aesthetic Medicine.
In this episode, Dr. Milman discusses her practical advice for aging gracefully, supporting straightforward skincare practices over elaborate ones. She explains the effects of aging on the skin and offers helpful guidance on what matters most, such as utilizing products of the highest caliber and initiating preventative treatments when necessary.
What’s the key to long-lasting results? Dr. Milman emphasizes the value of working with qualified professionals for aesthetic treatments, ensuring both safety and effectiveness. Her take: beauty and confidence can thrive with a “less is more” philosophy.
Quotes
- “How many of us have looked in the mirror one day and realized we don’t quite recognize ourselves anymore, both from the inside and out? When we are on a journey of rediscovering our inner identity, I hear all the time how challenging it can feel when our external identity feels foreign too.” (01:57 | Andrea Hecht)
- “I am a very, very big proponent of less is more. I definitely do not think that it is necessary to use a 25-step skincare routine or do all sorts of injections or a million lasers, etc.” (12:04 | Dr. Julia Milman)
- “The way your skin looks is definitely a lot more important than any sort of injections… Things like Botox and other treatments are, of course, important if someone isn’t opposed to that kind of stuff, but skincare is definitely first.” (13:06 | Dr. Julia Milman)
- “Preventative Botox is key. Just like in any medical aspect, in any medical specialty, prevention is always better than needing to treat afterwards. So, that is an option for wrinkles for prevention and for treating as well.” (29:17 | Dr. Julia Milman)
- “Try not to succumb to the social media pressures and challenges. Do what feels right for you. Do not listen to anybody else. If looking at yourself in the mirror is something that’s bothersome to you and you’d like to treat it or you’d like to take care of something, go for it. But if you’re somebody who doesn’t want to do anything and who is happy the way that you are right now and would like to continue that, then do that.” (51:14 | Dr. Julia Milman)

Embracing Change During the Back-to-School Season
Tuesday Sep 10, 2024
Tuesday Sep 10, 2024
“Back-to-school season isn’t just about the kids—it’s about us, too,” says Andrea Hecht. In this episode, she reminds us that this time of year brings new beginnings not only for children but also for parents. Sharing a nostalgic story from her own school days, Andrea reflects on the excitement and potential that come with this season. It’s the perfect moment for mothers to pause and consider how they can reset and rejuvenate their own lives alongside their children.
To guide this process, Andrea introduces her RESET framework, a practical five-step tool designed to help women reconnect with joy and purpose. The steps—Release, Evaluate, Start Fresh, Energize, and Transform—invite women to let go of what no longer serves them, reassess their paths, embrace new opportunities, infuse their lives with fresh energy, and take real steps toward a more fulfilling life.
Andrea’s message is clear: Change isn’t something to fear—it’s an opportunity for growth. Tune in to discover how this season can be your perfect chance to realign with your values, embrace new possibilities, and kickstart your own fresh chapter!
Quotes
- “Back-to-school season isn’t just about the kids—it’s about us, too.” (02:35 | Andrea Hecht)
- “It took me back to thinking about when my kids started kindergarten and all those big milestones that mark the beginning of their educational journeys, and now as they face new challenges, I’m really inspired to see this season as a fresh start in my own life. Reflecting on the different life milestones, whether it’s your child’s first day of kindergarten, their first day of school, their transition to high school, or maybe they’re preparing for college, it can all feel like a whirlwind. So often, we’re juggling their schedules, their dreams, and we put ours on hold. But I want you to stop and think, what if we use this back-to-school season to support not just our kids, but also to support ourselves?” (06:23 | Andrea Hecht)
- “I encourage you to use this opportunity again to transform and to grow. This isn’t just about sending your kids back to school, but it’s really about giving yourself the chance to hit the reset button and refresh your own path. This is the perfect opportunity to do it. Whether you’re navigating the college prep situation with your kids, managing a hectic schedule, adjusting to becoming an empty nester, or maybe even starting a new job, now is really the perfect time to reset yourself and rediscover your journey back to you.” (14:01 | Andrea Hecht)

Mom Brain with Dr. Nicole Pensak
Tuesday Aug 27, 2024
Tuesday Aug 27, 2024
“Mothers really are the ultimate caregivers, and we don’t have enough support for mothers,” says Dr. Nicole Pensak, a licensed clinical psychologist and author of “Rattled: How to Calm New Mom Anxiety with the Power of the Postpartum Brain.” In this episode, she sits down with Andrea Hecht to shed light on the often-overlooked mental health challenges that new mothers face.
Dr. Pensak draws on her extensive training at Yale and Harvard, as well as her personal experiences with postpartum depression and anxiety—challenges that were only intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her journey from struggling to thriving led her to write “Rattled” and offer free resources on Instagram, aiming to support mothers during this transformative period.
Dr. Pensak explains how the brain undergoes rapid changes postpartum, similar to those seen during adolescence. These changes, though overwhelming, actually prepare the brain for caregiving by enhancing mental flexibility, empathy, and problem-solving skills. Rather than viewing “mom brain” negatively, Dr. Pensak reframes it as a period of cognitive growth.
To manage postpartum mental health, Dr. Pensak offers practical strategies. She underscores the need to build a robust support system, including mental health professionals and social support groups, while also maintaining a consistent sleep schedule. Self-care is crucial, as is the importance of taking breaks to safeguard mental well-being.
Quotes
- “Mothers really are the ultimate caregivers, and we don’t have enough support for mothers.” (04:43 | Dr. Nicole Pensak)
- “I wanted to bring forward the science and provide evidence-based information—the good information—because in the age of social media, there’s information overload, and it’s hard to distinguish between what’s signal and what’s noise. I wanted to get high-quality information out there to mothers to help them feel their best and give them a roadmap for this incredible and challenging phase of life.” (06:29 | Dr. Nicole Pensak)
- “If you know something just doesn’t feel right, get the help. Seek it. Ask somebody. There’s no harm in asking someone for additional information… And it goes with anything—postpartum, anything. If something in your body or in the way that you’re operating just doesn’t feel right, ask someone. Don’t just chalk it up to, “Oh, I’m too tired,” or make excuses or whatever. I think it’s so important for everybody, but for mothers in particular, that we need to take care of ourselves and not feel guilty or ashamed for it because we’re the caregivers.” (15:22 | Andrea Hecht)

“I have to help in bridging that gap for students from graduation into the real world, not only in finding a job but also in understanding financial literacy,” says Heather Redisch, founder of the Talent Maven and creator of the Adulting 101 Masterclass. In this episode, she and Andrea Hecht dive into the unique challenges Gen Z faces, especially as they transition into adulthood during the post-COVID era. Heather emphasizes the critical role parents play in this process, advocating for a balance between support and allowing young adults to experience challenges on their own.
Heather reflects on her own career journey, including a pivotal move to New York City, which shaped her approach to recruiting and HR. She underscores the therapeutic aspect of recruiting, where understanding and addressing individual needs is key.
The episode explores the impact of technology on Gen Z, particularly how smartphones and social media have influenced their communication skills and confidence. Heather discusses the importance of teaching life skills—like financial literacy and effective communication—that aren’t always nurtured in a digital-first world.
Through her Adulting 101 Masterclass, Heather provides a comprehensive curriculum that equips young adults with the tools they need to succeed in the real world, from managing finances to building good credit. She also touches on the dynamics of a multigenerational workforce and the need for clear communication to bridge differences in work habits and expectations. Heather’s advice to parents is to coach and support their children without enabling them, fostering resilience and independence. She encourages young adults to build a personal advisory board of mentors to guide them through life’s challenges.
Quotes
- “Technology has really moved the needle, and kids aren’t keeping up with the times. They’re also extremely uncomfortable in their own skin. Their confidence level isn’t great, their eye contact isn’t great, and they don’t really know how to put themselves out there. It became a pattern that made me realize I have to do something. I need to help bridge the gap for students from graduation into the real world—not only in finding a job but also in understanding financial literacy.” (10:27 | Heather Redisch)
- “Allowing us to really understand what this generation is all about—their skills or lack thereof—and the reasoning behind it is very important. I think any parent wants the best for their kids, and we’re trying to do the best we can with the information we have. It’s important to have these kinds of conversations so we can become educated, empowered, and able to support them in a way that’s empowering for them.” (21:36 | Andrea Hecht)
- “As a parent, you have to be comfortable being uncomfortable.” (51:34 | Heather Redisch)

Instilling Gratitude in the Next Generation
Tuesday Jul 30, 2024
Tuesday Jul 30, 2024
“Gratitude lights our world,” says Jill Rivkin, co-founder of Gratitude Generation. “It’s an overall attitude about how you approach your life.” This week, Andrea Hecht sits down with Jill to discuss the transformative power of gratitude. Jill shares her journey from being a young storyteller to becoming a magazine writer, editor, and children’s book author, as well as her transition from city life in Chicago to balancing motherhood and professional aspirations in the suburbs.
Jill’s passion for gratitude led her to co-found Gratitude Generation, an organization dedicated to teaching gratitude through hands-on service and education. They share practical ways to incorporate gratitude into daily life and emphasize the importance of modeling it for children. Jill and Andrea also offer personal stories and insights into fostering empathy and community support.
Listeners will be inspired by Jill’s journey and the actionable strategies she offers for cultivating a grateful and fulfilling life. This episode is a valuable resource for anyone looking to instill gratitude in themselves and future generations.
Quotes
- “Gratitude is an overall attitude about how you approach your life. It’s also an actionable attitude about how you approach things and with what feelings and reactions you approach them with.” (20:28 | Jill Rivkin)
- “Gratitude generation is at the heart in our community of inspiring gratitude with tens of thousands of people a year… GLOWING stands for Gratitude Lights Our World… When you feel grateful for what you’ve done or what you’ve been given or what you have, you will glow and it will light the world and make it all a better place. And we know we know the world could use some glowing.” (32:36 | Jill Rivkin)
- “I think that it is important to highlight that it does kind of wrap up into values. And so if we are to kind of pass this to the next generation, we need to stop and pause and look at ourselves and understand, is this one of our core values? And if it is, how are we exercising that muscle? And are we looking at things with the glass half full? Or are we always complaining? Or how does that trickle down?” (51:49 | Andrea Hecht)
